*Please note this position is part time for 10 hours per week*
A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
- Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone and hospital visits.
- Counsels women in the WIC clinic. Conducts both individual and group counseling sessions.
- Plan and organize peer counselor’s own group sessions.
- Receives a caseload of referrals and makes periodic contact with all contacts assigned.
- Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including promotion, support and trouble-shooting.
- Respects each participant by keeping her information strictly confidential.
- Keep accurate records of all contact made with WIC participants.
- Submit materials for monthly, quarterly and semi-annual and annual reports in a timely manner. Must submit monthly reports (e.g., Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Monthly Record, Monthly Timesheet and Travel Reimbursement Record) to Breastfeeding Coordinator the first week of every month.
- Provide clients with appropriate referrals, especially to outside breastfeeding resources (e.g., la Leche League).
- Attends periodic peer counseling staff meetings and recommended regional meetings.
- Attends breastfeeding conferences, trainings and workshops as determined by the Director and Senior Nutritionist.
- Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the Senior Nutritionist and Breastfeeding Coordinator. Assist in creating breastfeeding education materials.
- Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of annual Breastfeeding Week activities.
- Assists WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned.
- Assists in managing the Breastfeeding Warm Line. Call Warmline on assigned days.
- Check LCHC email on a regular basis.
- Let program and nutrition staff know when you arrive in the office.
- Enroll clients in Happiest Baby classes
- Visits LCHC’s Baby Café as needed.
- Makes hospital visits with WIC and WIC-eligible mothers in the hospital at scheduled intervals as agreed upon by the hospital and WIC agency.
Duties Related to Hospital Visits:
- Checks in with hospital nurse who supervises peer counselors (or designate) before visiting patient rooms.
- Visits mothers to assess their interest in breastfeeding and to provide basic assistance.
- Observes a feeding in accordance with hospital policy to check positioning and latch.
- Provides basic education and encouragement on:
- Reasons to breastfeed
- Overcoming barriers to breastfeeding
- Colostrum quantity and benefits
- Normal course of breastfeeding
- Positioning and latch
- Skin-to-skin and its benefits
- Maintaining adequate milk production
- Preventing common problems
- Anticipatory guidance for the early days home from the hospital
- Resources for breastfeeding support
- Respects each client by keeping her information strictly confidential
- Reports any breastfeeding concerns that are beyond the peer counselor scope of practice to the patient’s assigned nurse or lactation consultant, and the WIC designated breastfeeding expert.
- Keeps accurate records for all contacts and submits them in a timely manner to the WIC supervisor and to the hospital nurse following agreed upon procedures.
- Gives breastfeeding literature provided by the WIC Program.
- Refers to the WIC Office for follow-up with the WIC-Designated Breastfeeding Expert to arrange for an electric breast pump after discharge, if appropriate.
- Arranges for follow-up contacts after discharge if agreeable to the mother.
- Assists patients with accessing WIC services.
- Maintains knowledge and skills about breastfeeding through ongoing learning opportunities such as breastfeeding workshops, monthly staff meetings, and independent reading.
Training related to hospital visits:
- Participates in all standard WIC training programs of peer counselors, including formal training sessions, observing other peer counselors or lactation consultants helping mothers , and reading assigned books or materials about breastfeeding.
- Attends additional WIC training on providing breastfeeding support in the hospital.
- Attends orientation or training required by the hospital
- Shadows a lactation consultant or expert assisting new mothers in the hospital.
- Demonstrates an understanding of customer service principles by successfully completing on-line Customer Service training.
- Utilizes the principles of customer service when interacting with patients/clients, team members and staff from other departments.
- Appropriately handles or seeks support when customer service breakdowns occur.
- Demonstrates knowledge of culture by successfully completing the on-line training on Cultural Competence.
- Utilizes an appreciation of and respect for diversity when interacting with patients/clients, team members and staff from other departments.
- Responds appropriately or seeks support when confronted with cultural biases or conflicts.
- Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding, and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
- Can work 10 hours a week (All hours must be worked in WIC office. Must be able to work set weekly office hours to allow for on-going scheduling of individual and group appointments.)
- Have a telephone, and is willing to make or receive phone calls from home
- Have transportation and is willing to travel to sites and Framingham for training.
- Have excellent communication skills.
- Attend a series of peer counseling trainings at the WIC Learning Center in Framingham.
- Observes other peer counselors or lactation consultants helping mothers’ breastfeed.
- Reads assigned books or materials about breastfeeding.
