Recovery Coach/Addiction Treatment


The Recovery Coach works with individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) within our Primary and Behavioral Health Care Integration Teams or within our Homeless OUD Team.

The Recovery Coach supports individuals struggling with OUD through every stage of their recovery process from chaotic substance use to long-term abstinence. The Recovery Coach supports clients through their recovery process who lack a stable recovery network. The Recovery Coach’s role is not clinical, but is an essential role within a client’s network of supporters. The Recovery Coach works in collaboration with the Clinical Team (or Homeless OUD team) to help a client sustain and maintain their recovery.

The Recovery Coach must have a deep understanding of and respect for each individual’s unique path in making sustainable and positive life change as it relates to OUD. The Recovery Coach must have knowledge and experience navigating the drug and alcohol treatment system, experience providing overdose prevention education and Narcan training. Must have experience with harm reduction techniques and be comfortable applying as needed. The Recovery Coach serves as a role model, mentor, advocate and motivator to individuals with SUD.


  • Respect and maintain patient confidentiality in all aspects of care including use of electronic information.  
  • Treat all patients and fellow staff in a welcoming and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate professionalism by appropriate attire, attendance, attitude and behavior within the department setting. 
  • Contribute to the team effort by supporting all team members and maintaining an open and positive attitude
  • Welcome new facility staff to the team by assisting with their orientation to the team and mentoring them as requested.


  • Provide education and support to service recipients for every phase of the journey from engagement, treatment initiation, stabilization and relapse.
  • OUD support planning - facilitate transition from a professionally directed service plan to a self-directed service. The goal is to transition from professionally assisted recovery initiation to personally directed, community supported recovery maintenance.
  • Promote self-advocacy by assisting persons with OUD to have their voices fully heard; their needs, goals and objectives established as the focal point of rehabilitation and clinical services.
  • Actively identify, maintain and support linkages to community resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual resources, mutual self- help groups, professional services, harm reduction programs etc.) that support each individual person’s goals and interests.
  • Develop relationships with community groups/agencies in partnership with others in the agency.
  • Identify barriers for individuals with OUD (internal and external) to full participation in community resources and develop strategies to overcome those barriers.
  • Promote consumer engagement with primary care and behavioral health care and appointments, compliance with the healthcare registry, involvement and engagement with wellness services.
  • Complete all tracking and reporting requirements for outcomes and evaluation.
  • Maintain appropriate professional standards and provides appropriate follow-up for consumers
  • Provide self-help recovery services and other peer wellness services
  • Demonstrate ways to become empowered and self-responsible,
  • Demonstrate ability to work with consumers with diverse backgrounds.

Customer Service:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of customer service principles by successfully completing on-line Customer Service training and ACES Training.
  • Utilizes the principles of customer service when interacting with patients/clients, team members and staff from other departments. 
  • Appropriately handles or seeks support when customer service breakdowns occur.

Cultural Competence:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of culture by successfully completing the on-line training on Cultural Competence. 
  • Utilizes an appreciation of and respect for diversity when interacting with patients/clients, team members and staff from other departments. 
  • Responds appropriately or seeks support when confronted with cultural biases or conflicts.

Emergency Situations:

  • In order to respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations, any staff member may be assigned temporary duties which differ from those in the job description, or may be assigned temporarily to a different location or schedule. 
  • Understands that all staff should have a personal emergency plan in place to best respond to his/she job responsibilities should health center emergency arise 


The Recovery Coach receives supervision by the Project Director.



  • Bachelors degree preferred and Massachusetts peer specialist certification;
  • Knowledge of recovery based concepts.
  • Lived experience with OUD, either with immediate family or self.
  • Good communitcation skills, good organizational skills, personal resilience.
  • Limited travel to trainings and conferences may be required.


  • The essential job duties of this position present risk of exposure to bodily fluids and blood borne pathogens.  Annual attendance at LCHC Bloodborne pathogen training is required.  
  • Up to date immunizations and annual TB testing is required.  
  • Hepatitis B vaccine and annual flu immunization are strongly recommended and available at no charge at the Health Center.  Declination form must be signed if Hepatitis B vaccine is declined.
  • Results of inquiry to Criminal Offender Record Investigation (CORI) must be acceptable under health center standards.
